The design concept for this project was an environmental one: to aid migrating fish to find their upstream spawning grounds. We also sought to create a buffer for rain and floodwaters, thereby reducing the risk of scour erosion threatening the railway embankment of the prominent west coast main line.
Collaborating closely with Amco Giffen, Westlin was appointed as the civils contractor on the project, notably focusing on formwork, reinforcement, and in-situ concrete works for the river channels.
A reinforced concrete slab was installed, along with 3m high walls to help with the safe migration of fish upstream.
Despite the challenges posed by Scotland’s wettest winter ever recorded, Westlin ‘s team were able to deliver the project in a timely fashion.
Key achievements included a reduction in embankment erosion risks, creation of a pathway for fish migration, and prestigious recognitions, including the Breedom Environmental award and a nomination for the National Rail Awards 2016.
